In this age of fast-food, trans fats, refined sugars, artificial preservatives, pesticides, and other health hazards, the average American colon is in a crisis. Though our society has made technological and scientific advances at an astronomical pace, our diets have digressed and our colons have suffered in the process. The average American is carrying an alarming 8 to 10 pounds of undigested fecal matter in the colon. Some are carrying even greater than this! What’s more alarming is that most are not aware of the need to detoxify the colon. This article will address this issue in a nutshell.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions concerning colon detoxification:

What does the colon do?

Why should we detoxify the colon?

How do we detoxify the colon?

How do we know if we have successfully detoxified the colon?

Let’s address the first question. What does the colon do?

The colon is a vital part of the digestive system - specifically, the large intestine. Once food is digested by the small intestine, the waste passes s into the large intestine. It is here that nutrients and water are drawn out so they can be utilized by the body. The remainder of the waste is eliminated.

Now that we have a general idea of what the colon does, why should we detoxify the colon?

As we stated earlier, the colon’s job is to eliminate waste from the body. The problem is that the average American diet hinders the colon from doing its job effectively. Fatty foods, refined sugars, artificial preservatives and other artificial substances are detrimental to the colon. The colon creates mucus and sludge in order to defend itself from unhealthy foods. When these substances are produced in excess, it becomes difficult for them to be eliminated from the colon. Eventually, the colon is congested with this mucus and sludge as well as other fecal matter and constipation can result. Even if constipation doesn’t occur, mucus and sludge can buildup and stick to the walls of the colon. As these substances cling to the colon’s walls, they discharge toxins into the bloodstream. This results in the onset of a variety of sicknesses and diseases, allergies, chronic fatigue, and even pain.

This should be a convincing enough argument in favor of colon detoxification. So, how do we detoxify the colon?

There are a variety of methods used for detoxifying the colon. One option is an enema. This method is uncomfortable for most people because it involves thrusting water into the rectum and holding it in for a while before letting it out. In addition to being uncomfortable, enemas can also be harmful to the digestive tract and only work within the first few inches of the colon.

Colon hydrotherapy (or the colonic) is another method for detoxifying the colon. This process is typically performed by a certified or licensed professional. This process also involves thrusting water into the colon, but is done within a system wherein the waste flows directly into a sewage line.

Because of the intrusive nature of enemas and colonics, most people prefer using herbal supplements. Most supplements are taken orally in a capsule or are mixed with a liquid and ingested. These are probably the most safe and effective of all the methods mentioned.

With all these methods in mind, how do we know if we have successfully detoxified the colon?

The success of any colon detoxification can be determined by the waste that is eliminated from the body. If a detoxification is successful, then it will expel mucus as well as solid and dark fecal matter. In addition to the elimination of these substances, you should also notice one or more of the following: weight loss, a sense of feeling lighter inside, improved skin appearance, and allergy relief. Colon detoxification also boosts the immune system because the body eliminates so many harmful toxins.
