Detoxification – Is It Right For You?

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 542

When we think about detoxification, many people think of physical and chemical dependence on drugs or alcohol. Detoxification is so much more than just breaking an addiction. It is the removal of toxic substances from the body. Many times, dieters use detoxification as a method of cleansing their bodies of all of its impurities after a period of unhealthy eating. It is seen as a way to jump start a new healthy routine and start fresh. Detoxification is thought to increase energy, aid digestion, and make bowel function more regular. In addition, many people believe detoxification clears the mind and helps improve concentration and brain function.

There are several different types of detoxification diets. Some people choose to go on a juice fast where only fruit juice, or fresh fruit, is consumed for several days. Others may eat only vegetables. Rice and whole grains, and beans, are other things consumed during detoxification. Herbal tea, water and lemon juice mixed with water are frequently consumed. Water is especially important to help cleanse the body during detoxification. Eight or more glasses of water should be consumed each day. Many times, detoxification begins with a period of fasting prior to beginning juice fast or another method of detoxification. A typical detoxification diet can range from 3 to 10 days.

Detoxification may come with several side effects in the beginning. Many people experience headaches for the first few days. This may be due to caffeine withdrawal. Side effects also include feeling weak or tired, irritable and hungry. A detoxification diet can cause acne to surface. It can make an individual have constipation or diarrhea. It is important to consume a well-balanced multivitamin while on a detoxification diet.

There is no physical evidence that a detoxification diet actually removes toxins from the body. If the liver and kidney are functioning correctly, toxins should be removed on a regular basis without resorting to extreme measures. Critics of the practice believe detoxification simply puts an unnecessary strain on the body. Dieticians especially do not support detoxification diets. An abrupt change in diet can be more harmful than good, and can put a shock on the body. Some even compare the practice to binge eating, in terms of harmfulness to the body. They also feel that many people use detoxification as an excuse to eat badly in anticipation of beginning the program. Many people believe the same effects can be achieved simply by eating a well balanced diet including lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains on a regular basis. Still, many people claim to feel lighter - and overall better - at the end of such a diet.

Women who are pregnant or nursing are urged not to try a detoxification regimen. People who have other health problems such as diabetes, anemia, or heart disease should also avoid detoxification. Such diets can encourage blood sugar problems, muscle breakdown, and vitamin deficiencies. The risks outweigh the potential benefits. Anyone who is considering detoxification should consult with his physician prior to starting.
