Alcohol Detoxification - Gaining An Understanding

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 606

Alcohol, for many can be highly addictive drug and along with smoking is perfectly legal. Fortunately for those that become addicted to alcohol there is a way out in the form of alcohol detoxification. In essence, alcohol detoxification is the first step in rehabilitation and treatment for alcohol abuse. It is not an easy process, in fact because alcohol detoxification or 'detox' is an abrupt stopping of alcohol drinking coupled with the substitution of drugs, patience, will power and determination are going to be needed. The whole process of alcohol detoxification is long and drawn-out. It can involve medicine, in-patient treatment in a de-addiction facility, and support from doctors, nurses, family, and the community. And of course one other reason why alcohol detoxification may be very difficult, is down to the level of abuse, and it may take months or even years to completely clear its effects. So as you can see, detoxification from alcohol is only the first step in the recovery process.

Detoxification itself refers to the planned withdrawal of alcohol. It should really only be seen as the first step towards achieving abstinence. The detoxification is the process of removing any residual toxins that are present in the human body, which have occurred due to the abuse of alcohol. One thing to bear in mind is that detoxification is seen much more as a standalone procedure that should be undertaken when the patient is ready, and it is not necessarily a prerequisite of starting treatment. Detoxification in alcohol treatment is normally a short course of medication to free the body of withdrawal symptoms while trying to quit drinking. But, the good news is that detoxification may or may not be necessary. It all depends upon an individual's age, medical status, and history of alcohol intake. Alcohol detoxification can continue for several weeks after the withdrawal period.

The withdrawal period is when the patient stays away from drinks for a period of time. During withdrawal there tends to be craving for more of the substance being removed. Withdrawal symptoms are generally thought of as a feature of the later stages of a drinking career, and once they have occurred then subsequent manifestations in terms of both frequency and severity depend upon a complex interaction of factors, but above all blood alcohol level seems to be important. There are many symptoms associated with withdrawal. Symptoms can include: feeling sick, trembling, sweating, craving for alcohol, and just feeling awful. Most patients undergoing alcohol withdrawal can be treated safely and effectively as outpatients. As you may have already guessed, the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal relate proportionately to the amount of alcoholic intake and the duration of a persons recent drinking habit.

So, on the whole, alcohol detoxification is the first step towards sobriety, but it is not without it‘s challenges. Alcohol detoxification is the same as alcohol withdrawals and, without proper medical supervision or care, the effects can be extremely dangerous. It is strongly recommended that it should not be attempted alone or without prior consent from any medical professional. Detoxification is an opportunity to offer patients information and to motivate them for longer-term treatment. Detoxification takes time, and demands compassion from others and goes a long ways to show a person new to the recovery process that he or she is not a bad person trying to get good, but a sick person trying to get well. Ultimately, if going down the route of alcohol detoxification then please use the help of health care professionals.
